Center Director & Principal Investigator

R. Lawrence Moss, MD; Center Director & Principal Investigator

R. Lawrence Moss received his medical degree at the University of California, San Diego. He trained in General Surgery in Seattle at Virginia Mason Medical Center and subsequently completed fellowships in Surgical Critical Care and Pediatric Surgery at Northwestern University. He then spent two years on the faculty at University of New Mexico followed by six years on the faculty at Stanford University. At Stanford Dr. Moss served as Surgical Director of the ECMO program and the PICU and as Director of Surgical Research. He came to Yale in August 2002 as Surgeon-in-Chief for the Children's Hospital and became Division Chief and Program Director of Pediatric Surgery in July 2003. Dr. Moss has a research interest in clinical trials and evidence-based pediatric surgery. His clinical interests include neonatal surgery, management of pelvic malformations and separation of conjoined twins. As Center Director and Principal Investigator, Dr. Moss provides clinical, research and administrative leadership for all YCCSR projects.

Bonnie Lang Silverman, PhD; Clinical Epidemiologist/Lead Research Coordinator

Bonnie Lang Silverman received her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst School of Public Health and Health Sciences in 1998. Dr. Silverman has over 20 years of clinical experience as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and a faculty member at State University of NY at Stony Brook and University of Connecticut. She has authored and coedited many chapters reviewing fetal development and high risk neonates in several textbooks of nursing. Prior to coming to Yale, she was employed as a senior epidemiologist by the CT Department of Public Health (DPH) for 5 years. At the DPH, Dr. Silverman was Principal Investigator of a CDC Grant which supported development of a state-wide Children with Special Health Care Needs Registry. Her clinical interests are the epidemiology of birth defects, specifically methods for ascertaining the prevalence and outcome of prenatally diagnosed cases. Dr. Silverman provides clinical epidemiological support and coordination for the YCCSR.

Christopher Kane Breuer, MD; Principal Investigator

Christopher K. Breuer received his medical degree from Brown University Medical School, where he went on to residency in General Surgery. Dr. Breuer was a resident in Pediatric Surgery and in Critical Care at The Children's Hospital in Boston. He subsequently completed a research fellowship in Tissue Engineering at Harvard University and a Pediatric Surgery fellowship at Brown. While at Harvard, he received a patent in tissue engineering. Upon completion of his training, he joined and later became Chief of Pediatric Surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, while holding an adjunct appointment in the Department of Physiology and Medicine at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research. Dr. Breuer is board-certified in general surgery and in pediatric surgery. In addition to clinical pediatric surgery, Dr. Breuer will help Yale develop a nationally recognized, externally funded scientific program in tissue engineering.

Milissa McKee, MD, MPH; Principal Investigator

Milissa A. McKee received her medical degree from the University of North Dakota, went on to residency in general surgery at Loma Linda University Medical Center in southern California, and completed a clinical fellowship in pediatric surgery and a research fellowship in general surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She also completed a Masters in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Upon completion of her training in 2001 she joined the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Yale. She is the Director of Pediatric Trauma and the Surgical Co-Director of the PICU. Dr. McKee will be conducting clinical trials in pediatric surgery and has a special interest in the application of minimally invasive techniques in children.

Robert Touloukian, MD; Principal Investigator

Robert J. Touloukian received his medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his General Surgical Residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and his Pediatric Surgical training at the Babies Hospital. He joined the Faculty at the Yale School of Medicine in 1968 and has been the Chief of Pediatric Surgery since 1973 and the Fellowship Program Director in Pediatric Surgery since July 1, 1994. Dr. Touloukian has had a long-term interest in necrotizing enterocolitis, short bowel syndrome, pediatric trauma, the treatment of solid tumors and Pediatric Surgical education. Dr. Touloukian is president-elect of the American Pediatric Surgical Association.
