Project Goal

  • to determine whether early feeding, and rapid advancement of feedings increases the risk for development of NEC Totalis in premature infants, and
  • to determine whether there are clinical changes which predict the onset of NEC Totalis.

Study Design

A case control study nested in the cohort of premature infants admitted to the Yale Newborn Special Care Unit over a 10 year period.

Risk Factors of Interest :

  • gender
  • race
  • birth weight
  • gestational age
  • birth weight percentile
  • clinical status 24 – 48 hours before the onset
  • feeding patterns
  • presence of sepsis
  • need for mechanical ventilation
  • perinatal risk factors that may increase risk for NEC: Apgar score, route of delivery, and maternal factors.

Outcome :Development of NEC Totalis.
